Dear friends and companions of Malteser International,
In our social media activities in April, we gave the stage in large parts to environmental protection, climate change and sustainability topics, leading up to Earth Day on April 22nd. The planting of trees plays a prominent role here. What trees have to do with our work for people in need? A lot!
Extreme weather conditions caused by global warming are becoming more frequent, and are increasingly the cause of displacement, hunger and homelessness – unfairly, this is especially true for those regions of the world that contribute the least to climate change. Persistent droughts in Kenya, India and Colombia, storms and floods in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Kenya and Haiti are just a few examples from countries where we support affected people. According to a UN report, more than 30 million people were displaced due to climate-related disasters in 2022. If nothing changes, studies show that this figure could rise to over 200 million by 2050.
Which brings us back to the trees. Trees are among our most impactful staff members when it comes to preventing natural disasters from happening or minimising their impact. This is why in 2023, together with local partner organisations, we planted more than 85,000 trees in our projects worldwide and supported the protection of over 690 hectares of forest. Their cultivation generates additional income for Colombian families in need, vegetables thrive in their wind shadow in the Indian Thar Desert, where previously this was deemed impossible, and fish live again between the roots of mangroves in Haiti, whose catch provides food and income for people threatened by hunger and poverty.
Please support our work: with just 30 euros we can revitalise 12,5 m² of mangrove forest. Together, let's plant even more trees – for a better future for people in need.

| Of Trees, Bees and the Power of Teamwork
When Martin Lokolo sought refuge in Uganda in 2016 to escape South Sudan's civil war, he brought not only a few belongings but also his entrepreneurial spirit. At the refugee camp, Martin started a group to preserve South Sudanese music and dance, which later evolved into a collective of farmers and beekeepers. We supported Martin's initiative by providing 4.000 beehives and planting 150,000 trees.
