"The difficulties and stresses caused by the war motivated me to seek help. I still use the advice and techniques I was taught."
- Tamara, 66, from Girske, Luhansk Oblast |
Dear friends and supporters of Malteser International,
For four years now, Ukraine has been living under the shadow of nationwide war – years defined by fear, uncertainty and loss. More than half of the population is experiencing a serious decline in mental well‑being. For many, stress is no longer temporary, it has become part of daily life.
This winter has been especially harsh. With ongoing power and heating outages and temperatures dropping below freezing, each day has become an act of endurance. While people continue to demonstrate extraordinary resilience, their strength is increasingly stretched to its limits.
Tamara, 66 years old and from Girske in the east of the country, is one of them. Four years ago, her home was severely damaged, forcing her and her husband to flee. Seeking safety in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, she instead found herself once again living under the threat of daily attacks. The constant insecurity has left her drained and struggling to hold on to hope. Watch her tell her to her story in her own words. |
 |
Through the psychosocial hotline operated by our partner Avalyst, Tamara and her husband received professional support and practical tools to better manage her anxiety and fears. For Tamara, this assistance has been a vital lifeline in an otherwise overwhelming situation.
Together with you, we remain committed to standing alongside the people of Ukraine – delivering food, winter assistance, medical care and essential psychological support.
Please help us continue to bring hope and stability to people like Tamara. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your solidarity and support.

Currently, 3.7 million Ukrainians are internally displaced, and an estimated 10.8 million are in need of humanitarian assitance (OCHA, January 2026). Everyone in Ukraine is affected by the consequences of the war against their country, which is omnipresent every day. During the last year, our teams noted a further deterioration of mental health, with many people showing a deep mental fatigue. In 2025, we expanded our psychosocial support services, provided winterization, food parcels, and hygiene kits, and supported our partner organizations with the rehabilitaton of healthcare institutions and community buildings. |
