Dear friends and supporters of Malteser International,
Flash floods sweeping away everything in their path. Earthquakes destroying homes and lives. And a rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak: over the past several months, you have helped people in need through an almost unimaginable succession of disasters. At the same time, you have continued to stand with us in supporting those affected by protracted crises and conflicts.
The Long-Term Impact
After floods cease, wars officially end, and international news teams return home, the need and suffering caused by these catastrophes continue. In countries such as Venezuela and Nepal, where families were already facing economic and climate change related crises, the consequences of this year's disasters will persist for years. And where wars and conflicts have sown mistrust and suffering, the path to recovery is especially challenging. Yet all too often, these ongoing humanitarian crises fade from public attention as the world's focus shifts elsewhere.
Thank You!
Today, on behalf of everyone here at Malteser International, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude. Thank you for being among those who continue to care. Because where need and suffering remain, our support must remain as well.
Below, you'll find insights into the work made possible by your generosity. Together, we accomplished so much in these past months! |
Yours sincerely,
Izabella Toth Executive Director Resources & Corporate Affairs |
The psychological toll of more than four years of war in Ukraine is at least as devastating as the visible destruction of homes, streets, and infrastructure. Children and adolescents are particularly hard hit, suffering from sleep disorders, depression, and chronic stress. We support them through mobile units offering psychological support, family counseling, and stress management training in schools, among other measures. |

Since the devastating earthquakes in June, we support affected people together with the Order of Malta in Venezuela and our long-standing partner PALUZ. Mobile medical teams are providing healthcare services in Caracas, La Guaira, and Miranda, while psychosocial support services have been established and water, sanitation, and hygiene activities, as well as health awareness campaigns, have been expanded. We are also supplying medicines and medical equipment to strengthen the response. |

The current Ebola outbreak is said to be the worst in history in the DR Congo. Our experienced teams are carrying out extensive community awareness activities, training healthcare workers, and strengthening infection prevention and control measures. This includes distributing hygiene supplies, constructing treatment centers for infectious diseases, and improving water supply systems in health facilities and communities. |

The people in Gaza are in urgent need of health support as most of the hospitals in the Gaza Strip have been damaged or destroyed. The health station we coordinate in Gaza City in cooperation with the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem provides consultations, treatment, and referrals for up to 100 patients per day. |

The devastating flash floods in the Himalayas on August 26 claimed the lives of over 1,100 people and destroyed vital infrastructure. Approximately 6,000 people are still missing. Many survivors are traumatized. Together with our Nepalese partner organizations RSDAC and KOSHISH, we are providing people in the hard-hit Nuwakot District with essential relief supplies and psychosocial support. |
