Dear friends and supporters of Malteser International,
Three years after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army, around 10 million people in the country are currently affected by mental illness, according to the United Nations. As the war progresses, our local partner organizations and our Ukraine team are seeing a steadily growing need for trauma treatment.
We expand our work in mental health support
Last year alone, together with our local partner network, we provided psychosocial support to more than 40,000 children and adults affected by the war. This year, we aim to reach even more people with trauma treatment and other therapy sessions, family counseling, psychoeducation in daycare centers and schools, information events, art therapies and mobile child therapy units.
Mental health is essential
The longer the war lasts, the more exhausted people become: Their resilience decreases and the risk of mental illness increases. This is why strengthening the mental health resilience of every single person in Ukraine, as well as society as a whole, is vital.
"The war changes everything," says Pavlo Titko, head of Malteser Ukraine, "but the most important thing remains untouched: our ability to be there for each other and to hold on to this world even when it is shaken. Mental resilience means overcoming difficulties together, finding meaning and continuing on the path to the future."
Together with you, we remain at the side of the people in Ukraine. Today. Tomorrow. As long as it is necessary.
Yours sincerely,
Lisa Schönmeier Head of the Ukraine department at Malteser International |

In the early morning of February 24, 2022, Russia launched a nationwide war of aggression against Ukraine. Since then, 10.6 million Ukrainians have been displaced; currently 12.7 million people in Ukraine are in need of humanitarian aid (as of February 2025, source: UNHCR). Everyone in the country is affected by the consequences of the war, which is omnipresent every day. Medical care, the reconstruction of destroyed houses and important infrastructure, the provision of shelter, the transport of essential relief supplies and psychosocial support are just some of the support needs. |
