Dear friends and companions of Malteser International,
This week has started with shocking news. The Syrian/Turkish border region was hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake – one of the strongest ever recorded in the Eastern Mediterranean – at around 4am local time. The epicenter was near to MI’s longstanding project region around Kilis and Gaziantep. More than 1.000 people are confirmed dead as of 12:00 CET. This number is expected to rise precipitately in the coming hours and days. MI has already initiated an immediate crisis intervention, and the first team from our Emergency Relief department are en route to the area.
"Our colleagues in Gaziantep and Kilis report on the massive destruction caused by the quake. Thankfully, our team is uninjured. An MI emergency response team has already been sent to the region. Our local partners are in urgent need of support, especially in the refugee affected areas in northern Syria, where hundreds of thousands of people live in simple shelters and are now unprotected. The temperatures in the region are freezing and it is raining heavily. The number of injured earthquake victims is increasing constantly in the hospitals of our partner organizations. We must provide aid quickly," says Oliver Hochedez, Head of Malteser International's Emergency Relief Department.
