Dear friends and companions of Malteser International,
It was frightening forecasts that reached us already last week: A cyclone had formed over the Bay of Bengal and was heading towards Myanmar and Bangladesh, threatening the lives of thousands of people.
On Sunday morning local time, cyclone Mocha made landfall in the coastal regions of both countries. Strong winds and torrential rain caused landslides and floods in some areas. Although it is still too early to gauge the full magnitude of the disaster, the cyclone with wind speeds of up to 210 kilometers per hour has left a trail of destruction in its wake.
Despite the massive evacuation from coastal areas over the last few days, at least 400 people have been reported dead in especially hard-hit Rakhine State in Myanmar, according to local media and eyewitness reports.Tens of thousands of already vulnerable families are grappling with the aftermath of the disaster and are in desperate need of humanitarian aid. Many have been left with nothing after their homes have been completely destroyed.
Acute emergency relief during the first days after a disaster is crucial to save lives. Because of the early warning of the cyclone, our teams and partner organizations in Myanmar and Bangladesh were able to start early with the preparations of the emergency relief. We have already distributed food, drinking water, infant nutrition, and hygiene items and are coordinating further relief activities.
But more support is urgently needed. Donate now and help those affected by devastating cyclone Mocha.
Thank you for your support.
Yours sincerely,
|
