Dear Friends,

Even in normal times, responding to any emergency can be a complicated operation. But we are currently in uncharted territory and COVID-19 is hampering response to emergencies. As the world grapples with the pandemic, people affected by disasters are being forced to take survival measures that break social distancing. This increases the potential for infection. Despite these challenges, this month saw us respond to the needs of communities displaced by floods in western Uganda.

One thing is clear: Disasters are not stopping for COVID-19 and COVID-19 is not respecting the timelines of other crises. As the virus continues to spread at a time when climate change has increased the destructive potential of natural disasters, the scenario could become a frightening reality.

With your support, we will continue our work of protecting the vulnerable communities from diseases and disasters during this challenging time and deliver solutions that break people free from the cycle of vulnerability. Please keep giving us that vital support!

With heartfelt thanks,

May 2020

Uganda flooding: Emergency response during the
COVID-19 pandemic

Earlier this month, several people were swept away in floods that also left tens of thousands homeless in western Uganda. Days of torrential rainfall caused some rivers in the region to break their banks, destroying bridges, homes, hospitals, and other public infrastructure. Our response team is in the Kasese district assisting people affected, providing medical care and water.

Laura Beutler, Technical Coordinator for Malteser International in Uganda, explains the difficulties of responding to an emergency in COVID-19 times.

Bangladesh: Refugees in the crosshairs of a COVID-19 and monsoon season

As refugee camps in Cox's Bazar grapple with rising COVID-19 cases, Rohingya families are bracing for monsoon season following Cyclone Amphan's landfall. Rains, landslides and floods will only increase risk of infection.

Kenya Locust Emergency   Kenya’s locust emergency: A crisis within a crisis

Kenya is experiencing its worst locust invasion for 70 years and has seen a second invasion as new generations of swarms hatch and spread. The locusts' activities could cause devastating hunger and loss of livelihoods across a region already battling hunger and coronavirus.
