Dear friends and supporters of Malteser International,
“I left everything behind. I just took my grandchild and ran,” says Daw San Yi (63) about the day the devastating earthquake hit Myanmar. Now, two months later, the initial shock has passed, but the crisis is far from over.
- Nearly 3,800 lives were lost and over 5,000 people injured.
- Thousands still live in makeshift shelters, exposed to the elements.
- Continous heat and the upcoming monsoon season are worsening health risks and living conditions.
Our support for the survivors
The local communities urgently need clean water, healthcare, food, shelter, and protection. Our Emergency Response Teams and our partners have worked in the hardest-hit areas since March 28, delivering: - emergency medical assistance
- psychosocial and mental health support
- water, sanitation, and hygiene services
- distribution of relief items like food, non-food items, shelter kits, and cash
From immediate relief to early recovery
“I just want to fix our home … and our well. That’s all," says Daw San Yi, whose house, luckily, was damaged, but not destroyed. Like thousands of others, her family was forced to camp outside in the extreme heat that followed in the days after the catastrophe. Daw San Yi received medication for her high blood pressure at a Malteser International mobile clinic. With her grandchild in her arms and her community around her, her courage is steady.
Together with our partners, we are transitioning from immediate relief to early recovery. In this phase, continued support is vital, because the communities' own resources are falling short of the immense needs after the disaster. Please support Daw San Yi, her family and the 6.3 million others who are still dependent on life-saving aid.
Thank you! Yours sincerely,
Cordula Wasser Head of the Asia department at Malteser International |

After the devastating earthquake in Myanmar, Malteser International immediately provided €250,000 in emergency aid and initiated a comprehensive earthquake response. Together, our teams and local partners have provided urgently needed first relief aid in the most heavily affected regions of Mandalay, Naypyidaw, and the southern Shan State. Today, thousands of people are still living in makeshift shelters. Rebuilding their houses and lives will take a long time and they need all the support we can give. During this difficult time, we stand by their side. |

Malteser International, together with the RKI, ASB, and CADUS, has deployed a medical emergency team to support the fight against the latest cholera outbreak in Angola. Since the first case was confirmed in Cacuaco on January 7, 2025, the outbreak of the dangerous disease has spread, prompting urgent action. Our joint team, alongside volunteers, is on the ground coordinating logistics and assisting local health authorities in infection prevention and control. The goal: make healthcare facilities safer, curb the spread, and save lifes.

As part of the "Shifa initiative", over 100 German-Syrian doctors spent three weeks in Syria, supporting the struggling healthcare system. For many, it was their first time back in their homeland after years of war. What they witnessed, was devastating: Hospitals are in a dire state, lacking even the most basic supplies. Doctors Tawfiq Ghonaim and Majd Alkhatib provide an insight into their work in a public hospital in Damascus. This project is supported by our partner on the ground, the Independent Doctors Association, as well Aktion Deutschland Hilft, Germany’s Relief Coalition. |
