Dear friends and supporters of Malteser International,
World Humanitarian Day is observed on 19 August. It is a day to honour those who have lost their lives while helping others through humanitarian work. Over the past three years, an especially high number of humanitarian workers have lost their lives all over the world in general and in Gaza in particular. Please join me in remembering these humanitarian workers and their families, and watch our video to hear what gives our colleagues the strength to carry on, even in the most difficult circumstances.
Working under constant threat
At our clinic in Gaza City, we experience the realities of conflict every day. People with gunshots and other severe injuries come in at a daily basis, and concerns for our own safety have become part of daily life. True safety is something we have not known here for years.
When I began my career as a doctor, medical personnel and healthcare facilities were afforded special protection under international humanitarian law. Today, we see that many healthcare facilities in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed despite those laws. Every day, we continue our work despite the risks.
While humanitarian workers continue to face enormous risks, the people affected by the conflict bear an even heavier burden. Many families struggle to access the healthcare they need. Our clinic is one of the few places where people can receive essential medical care.
We continue to stand with the people
Our calling is to stand by those in need. Together with my colleagues, I remain committed to providing lifesaving care to the people of Gaza. Your support helps keep our clinic running and ensures that people in need can continue to receive treatment.
