“When I felt the ground shaking, I was with my grandchildren, and I told them not to move and to hold on. It was indescribable," says Haydee, 66, from Carabella in La Guaira state, one of the areas hit hardest by the earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24th. Haydee's family was lucky: Their home was damaged, but not destroyed, and all family members survived. “Thank God my family is safe. But I knew many people who have lost their lives.”
I have been on the ground in Venezuela since the beginning of the week with our Emergency Relief Team. The situation here is almost impossible to put into words. Entire blocks of streets have collapsed like houses of cards. I met Haydee and her family in the mobile clinic our Venezuelan partner organization had set up shortly after the catastrophe. When the clinic opened, I was amazed, despite the situation, how quickly a large number of patients came by. The need for healthcare support is very high.
Our partners are in the hardest-hit areas, helping as many people as they can. The mobile medical teams are visiting different communities every day to provide urgently needed healthcare to families like Haydee's. Her grandson Christopher and his two-year-old sister Adhara were treated, but the earthquake also left them with invisible wounds and economic hardship.
I have witnessed unbelievable tragedy in Venezuela. But I have also seen the incredible strength and solidarity of the Venezuelan people. Neighbors helping neighbors. People sharing what little they have. It really moved me.
The people I met were grateful for the support they have received, but also for being heard and seen. Much more help is needed urgently to support the people in Venezuela in the coming weeks and months. |
Haydee Darias, 66, from Venezuela is a true survivor. When she was eight years old, she lived through her first severe earthquake. In 1999, she survived the “Catastrophe of Vargas”, when torrential rains triggered landslides that killed and displaced thousands of people in what is now La Guaira. Despite hardships and challenges in her crises-stricken country, she built a life for herself and her family. Then, on June 24th, 2026, she felt the ground shake again. |
