Dear Friends,
We are seeing a grim reality in Beirut. This Tuesday, a huge explosion at the port of the Lebanese capital killed over 135 people and wounded more than 5,000 injured. Hospitals are overwhelmed and hundreds of thousands of people have suddenly been plunged into homelessness. This catastrophe couldn't have come at a worse time for Lebanon. The country is facing both an economic collapse and a rise in COVID-19 cases which has already stretched healthcare services thin.
Malteser International is working closely with the Lebanese Association of the Order of Malta and we are pulling together every resource at our disposal. Two mobile medical units from across the country have been mobilized towards Beirut to treat casualties and provide urgent medical aid. We have also sent a team to support relief efforts.
While we keep Lebanon and everyone affected by this disaster in our prayers, your vital support will ensure that we have the funds available to provide the urgent assistance the people of Beirut need during these difficult times.
