Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear friends and companions of Malteser International,
Sharing knowledge, learning from others, participating, exchanging ideas and staying in dialogue are core elements of our daily work and essential factors for succeeding with projects. This applies to Malteser International, to the cooperation with the Sovereign Order of Malta, with partners and networks, through constant contact with other organizations, by including the people on the ground.
As distinct as the focal points, countries and above all the crises of this world might are, we share a common goal: To help people, to do everything possible to alleviate their suffering. And this we can only achieve together. That is why the exchange of information as well as experience is vital for our work.
There are many platforms for this: face-to-face meetings, networking events, workshops and other big stages. One of them is the World Health Summit, which this year took place in Berlin from the 24th to the 26th of October.
"Global Health in Focus“ is one of the world's most important strategic conferences on global health. The importance of global health has been brought back into focus once again by the Corona pandemic. For many of us, global health has become a concept – indeed a tangible one.
We have seen a virus cross borders.
We have seen something far away at first suddenly be very close at last.
The themes - including Covid-19 - at this year's World Health Summit all pay attention to inequalities. Inequalities in access to health care, treatment, and how science and technology can be mobilized - to ensure societies are better prepared for future health crises.
We were there: We shared experiences, we exchanged ideas with experts and we listened. And in addition, we were pleased to receive a great award.
With today's newsletter edition I would like to share our experiences with you. I would be more than happy if you listened and followed.
Thank you very much.
Yours truly,
|

World Health Summit 2021: We were there!

| During a workshop on "Epidemic Preparedness beyond Covid-19 - What can be learned from countries with limited resources", we got the opportunity to share our knowledge and experience. Our colleague Johannes Schildknecht, program manager for the DR Congo, kindly presented our "excellent" project "Community communication as key for Preparedness, Prevention and Response - A comprehensive approach towards epidemics in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo" at the World Health Summit.
Communication and participation: People at the centre
The aim of the project, established in 2018, was and is to counter the various epidemics prompt and effective. Exchange, dialogue and communication are essential and the fundamental keys to success. The focus lies on the integration of the local population. With their involvement we can together shape pandemic prevention and response measures and thus widen our resources. Through this community we together develop and disseminate messages - e.g. via door-to-door awareness-raising, distribution of posters and flyers or via radio. The second pillar is an efficient early warning system that also relies on communication and networking in the village community. We think it's a great project. And we are not the only ones.

| Following the World Health Summit, on the 28th of October we were pleased to receive one of the most important and highly endowed prizes in the field of development cooperation: the renowned Else Kröner Fresenius Award. This year's prize-winning project has its focus on combating numerous known infectious diseases which trigger epidemics - such as acute meningitis, plague, polio, malaria or Ebola.
Dr. Jean-Paul Uvoyo Ulangi, DRC Country Medical Coordinator and Regional Health Advisor, received the award for us. The 44-year-old has been working for Malteser International for ten years. The prize is worth a total of 100,000 euros. The prize money will be used to strengthen the resilience of the health system in preparing for and responding to epidemics.
Thank you!

Guest at the E-Health Conference of the Sovereign Order of Malta in Rome

|
| On November 2nd, we were also guests at a conference of the Sovereign Order of Malta in Rome. The topic: E-health - from current experiences to future opportunities. In this context, we exchanged with experts from different fields on the digitalization of medical assistance and the advancement in technology to support aid.
From Malteser International, Janine Lietmeyer, Head of Regional Group Middle East, shared her experience from projects in Lebanon. She talked about how the digitalization of the mobile medical units operating in the country has resulted in a more efficient, time saving and orderly data collection methodology which has in return allowed an increase in the number of people assisted daily and an improvement of the doctor-patients’ consultation quality.
Thank you for this informative exchange!
