Dear friends and companions of Malteser International,
For more than a month now we have been accompanied by the images of one of the worst floods Pakistan has ever experienced. And there is still no end in sight to the suffering of millions of people. The number of lives lost in the floods has now risen to over 1,600. Almost 8 million people had to leave their homes and are now homeless or living in emergency shelters. They have hardly any access to clean drinking water. Their crops have been destroyed, food is scarce, hunger is looming. In addition, bridges, roads and hospitals are damaged or completely destroyed which makes it difficult to access urgently needed aid.
While in some areas the water level has dropped, large parts of the south are still flooded. It is uncertain when the floodwater will recede entirely. The UN predicts that some regions will remain under water for months which is very dangerous. Standing water being a breeding ground for infectious diseases deteriorates the situation in the country. Diarrhoea, typhoid, cholera and malaria are spreading and endangering even more lives. This poses the threat of a disaster after the disaster.
We are on the ground with our partner organisations and will continue to assist the people in the coming weeks with food packages, mosquito nets, hygiene kits, cash and medical care, among other things.
Help us support the people of Pakistan. You can make a difference with your donation.
Yours sincerely,
|

| Climate Change: The Poorest People are Hit the Hardest
It has already been scientifically proven that climate change contributed to the floods in Pakistan. Once again, the people who suffer from the climate crisis are those who have contributed little or nothing to the causes and at the same time lack the means to protect themselves against the devastating effects.
