Dear friends and supporters of Malteser International,
Today is UN World Water Day. This year's theme is “Save the Glaciers”. A topic that seems far removed from our work for people in need? Only at first glance.
Meltwater supplies two billion people with water – for now
Millions of people in six of our project countries in Asia are supplied with water by three of the five most important frozen freshwater reservoirs in the world. If the glaciers in the mountains and at the poles melt faster, the meltwater flows change. Experts predict natural disasters like mudslides and even faster climate change as a result, while at the same time drinking water supplies decrease. In our work, we witness some of these changes already.
When the water comes
Extreme weather will have an ever-greater effect for us all in the future. However, people in Asia have been hit particularly hard in recent years (WMO): in 2022 and 2024, cyclones and floods devastated large areas of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Myanmar and Bangladesh. We provided emergency relief in the form of food, hygiene kits, drinking water, mosquito nets and support for reconstruction.
When water is lacking
3.5 billion people worldwide lack access to safe water. In India, Nepal and Uganda, MI is committed to improving water and sanitation services through our Global WASH Program (read more below). We are working with people affected by water shortages in various regions to adapt their gardening and agricultural techniques to climate change to support their future resilience. Worldwide, we provided 679,040 men, women, and children with access to safe drinking water in 2024 alone.
With your donation, you support relief aid for people affected by climate-related disasters everywhere in the world. Every euro counts in making a safe water supply a reality for everyone. And only by working together can we ensure that water remains a life-giving element.
Yours sincerely,
Arno Coerver Global WASH & Environment Advisor at Malteser International |

Malteser International has long been active in supporting people affected by the consequences of climate change, both in the context of emergency relief and with projects focused on disaster risk reduction and adapting to climate change. A central element of our aid projects is increasing the resilience of people in risk areas, so that they can better manage recurring crises such as droughts, hurricanes and floods |

For years, the people of Muguma Village, DR Congo, had no access to safe drinking water. "Before Malteser International built a well, everyone had to fetch water from the contaminated river because there was no other water source," says Kayeny Rutha, a mother of five and a Community Health Worker for Malteser International. She plays an essential role in our joint work to prevent diseases in the DR Congo: Armed with knowledge, she fights for the health of her community. |

The structural challenges in the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector are immense. Social inequality, a lack of resources, a lack of sustainability, the marginalization of individual population groups and conflicts are just some of the problems that need to be overcome. Together with WASH United and the German Toilet Organization, we have developed a global program for WASH to address these challenges. |
