Dear friends and supporters of Malteser International,
Muhawe (picture above) fled from violence in the DR Congo to Uganda. Together with her husband and their seven children, including newborn twins, she walked for 12 hours to reach safety. Now she faces a new challenge: Rebuilding a life for her family in the refugee settlement Nakivale. Millions of families like Muhawe's have to endure extremely difficult living conditions. With our work in Africa, we want to support them by strengthening local health care systems, improving food security and water supplies, and providing aid for refugees.
Water, sanitation, dignity
In Nakivale, ensuring the health of her family is a daily struggle for Muhawe. Here and in other refugee settlements, the significant lack of water, sanitation, and hygiene has grown even worse in recent months. In Uganda, Kenya, and South Sudan, your support enables us to drill new boreholes, build solar powered water supply systems, install toilets, and provide soap, detergent, and other hygiene items. In Uganda, for example, in 2024 and 2025, we provided more than 19,000 people with access to improved sanitation facilities.
Health care for millions
We want to make comprehensive health care affordable and accessible to as many people as possible. In Nigeria, you donations help to build safe spaces of healing and support for women and girls who survived gender-based violence. In South Sudan, we offer mental health support to internally displaced people. In the DR Congo, we work together with local authorities to support clinics with medication, equipment, and staff training – measures that provide around three million people with improved access to health care.
Muhawe has started to sell tomatoes and mandazi to make a living for her family. She has received hygiene and sanitation support from our partner organization Nsamizi. Currently, her life is still very hard. But she is driven by her hope for a better future for her children.
Learn more about our work in Africa in the articles below! Work that is only possible because of people like you. Thank you for bringing hope to people in need!
Warm regards,
Daniela Krings Head of Regional Group Africa at Malteser International

Our work in the DR Congo is currently focused in the provinces of Ituri, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, and Kasai Central, where we have proven to be a reliable and competent partner for local hospitals and health facilities since 1996. In close cooperation with the Congolese Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization, we are working to improve hygiene and infection prevention and control measures. Our teams are also carrying out health promotion activities and reinforcing community engagement to sensitize members of the community about health, hygiene, safe water, and ways to protect themselves against disease. |

In our health work in Kenya since 2001, we aim to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS among disadvantaged groups in Nairobi, as well as to establish and expand the emergency medical services nationwide. Since the terrible drought of 2011, we have also been engaged in the arid north of the country in order to better prepare the semi-nomadic population living there for future periods of drought. |

We have been working in Nigeria since 2017 and help to improve living conditions in both refugee camps and host communities. We build wells, water systems, and toilets, and thus help to mitigate diseases such as cholera, which are caused by contaminated water. We also run several safe spaces: Houses where girls and women can find shelter and access psychosocial care and training opportunities to become independent and self-sufficient. |

In recent years, our programs in South Sudan focus on improving health, water, sanitation, and hygiene, and nutrition security. The civil war in South Sudan forced large parts of the rural population to flee to urban areas that are unable to support this population influx. In addition, almost 900,000 people have crossed the border from Sudan since the outbreak of the war in Sudan in April 2023. As a result, as of November 2024, 6.3 million people in South Sudan were food insecure. Among other measures to fight hunger, we provide school meals and offer support to families returning to their villages to start cultivating their fields again. |

We have been working in Uganda since 1996, focusing on providing refugees – primarily in northern Uganda – with essential health care, water and sanitation, and hygiene services. Since the outbreak of civil war in South Sudan, more than one million people have sought refuge in Uganda. The Rhino Camp refugee settlement hosts a significant population of South Sudanese refugees. Here, we are implementing measures to improve drinking water and hygiene for both refugees and the local community. We also support young adults as they integrate into the labor market and promote sustainable agriculture, helping to create lasting opportunities. |

Injuries and deaths resulting from road traffic accidents are a growing problem in Kenya and Uganda and one of the leading causes of death in the region. We are committed to improving emergency medical services and ambulance services in Kenya and Uganda while making them more accessible. In order to achieve this, we are working together with the ministries of health as well as training institutions and hospitals. |
