In my 15 years as Secretary General at Malteser International, I have witnessed several humanitarian crises including conflicts, natural disasters, and disease outbreaks. But COVID-19 is like nothing we have seen before. All of the countries where we work are affected.
We have seen the pandemic overwhelm advanced health systems in developed countries. Our greatest concern is that the virus takes hold in regions with weaker health systems or in countries like Syria, where humanitarian conditions are already dire due to conflict. A widespread outbreak of COVID-19 will have a dramatic impact on vulnerable populations in these places.
Malteser International is putting everything in place to respond to this crisis and prevent the worst from happening. Your vital support will ensure that we have the funds available to continue the lifesaving assistance people facing the threat of sickness need — even before it reaches them.
