Dear friends and companions of Malteser International,
Today is World Refugee Day, and this year it focuses on solidarity with refugees – because the estimated 120 million refugees worldwide (source: UNHCR), the highest number on record, need our open hearts and doors now more than ever. It's a day to celebrate their strengths, resilience, and achievements, and to reflect on the challenges they face every single day. Solidarity with refugees and displaced people also means supporting them by welcoming them into our communities and ensuring that they can thrive. Let's stand up for a world where refugees are welcomed!
One of the global top five countries of origin is in Europe: By the end of 2023, six million people from Ukraine lived as refugees in other countries, five percent more than in 2022; an additional 3.7 million Ukrainians were internally displaced (source: UNHCR). With your support, we at Malteser International stood by them. Among other help, we provided 333,999 war affected men, women and children with food, and distributed almost 26,000 hygiene, food, emergency, or winter packages. 44,593 persons, including children, whose psychological health is particularly threatened by the ongoing conflict, received psychosocial support from our partners in Ukraine.
Afghanistan, Syria (6.4 million refugees each) and Venezuela (6.1 million refugees), the DR Congo (6.3 million internally displaced persons) and Myanmar (2.6 million internally displaced persons): Together with you, we were and are on the ground, supporting the people whose stories stand behind the numbers (source: UNHCR) with emergency relief and long-term measures. Because we believe that every person has a right to our solidarity, to being seen as an individual, to access to high-quality health services and to a life in dignity.
With your donation, you can show refugees all over the world that they are not alone. Please continue to give displaced people your solidarity!
I thank you for your generous support.
Yours sincerely,
|

Millions of children in Ukraine are deeply affected by the war. Some have had to endure months hiding in cellars near the frontline, many have lost parents and relatives, their education is continually disrupted by air raid alerts. "Many children spend their pocket money for food for their relatives at war instead of toys or entertainment", says Olha from our mobile playground team. The "mobile playgrounds" give children the opportunity to play in a safe and relaxed atmosphere with toys and creative materials, guided by psychologically trained staff.
