Dear friends and companions of Malteser International,
In the past two weeks, Afghanistan has been struck by several severe earthquakes. Many communities in the province of Herat in the western part of the country now lie in ruins. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the first earthquake alone has claimed the lives of over 1,300 people, predominantly children and women. The recent earthquakes have also resulted in numerous casualties, and it is expected that the number will continue to rise. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected people and their families.
Even before the earthquakes, the situation in Afghanistan was catastrophic. According to the United Nations, approximately 28 million people, two-thirds of the total population, are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. The earthquake has left thousands of Afghans with nothing. They require medical care, food, as well as tents, blankets, and hygiene items. Winter is approaching, and in this region, it will be bitterly cold. We must ensure that these people receive the best possible protection until their houses are rebuilt.
In collaboration with our partner organization Union Aid, we are preparing emergency aid for those affected by the earthquakes. However, further support is urgently needed. Donate now and help people in need in Afghanistan.
Thank you for your support.
Yours sincerely,
|

Together with the NGO Forum, we call on the international community and the United Nations to take action to ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access to the affected areas.
