Dear friends and companions of Malteser International,
The war on Ukraine has been going on for more than two months now, and there is no end in sight to the endless suffering. Together with the Order of Malta in Ukraine and surrounding countries, we have been providing emergency relief since the beginning of the war. However, the longer this war lasts, the greater the consequences become for people living thousands of kilometres away from the war zone. Food and energy prices are rising rapidly and those who were struggling to survive and facing before this catastrophe – for example in Kenya, where due to the worst drought in decades more than 1.5 million livestock have already died in the past few months, and where about 3.5 million people are dependent on aid – are suffering the most.
Russia and Ukraine have been the major global suppliers of wheat, corn, cooking oil and fertiliser. Due to the shortage created by the war, prices for staple food are rising. The increased price of crude oil means that now petrol is hardly available in countries such as Kenya. This makes it more difficult to reach people with relief supplies. Aid is urgently needed, especially in the north of the country. We are distributing food and drinking water in order to save lives.
Despite the severity and number of crises we are facing, we continue to support people in need. Thank you for being there and making this possible!
Yours sincerely,
|

| The worldwide consequences of the war in Ukraine are immense. "The need for humanitarian aid has never been greater. We must not and will not forget the people who, although far away from this war, suffer the consequences. They too could die because of this war. If not by weapons, then by hunger," says Clemens Graf von Mirbach-Harff, Secretary General of Malteser International.

| Together with our partner PACIDA, we are providing emergency relief in the drought affected areas in Kenya. By distributing cash, we are ensuring that families in need are supplied with food. We are also providing clean drinking water in regions where wells have already dried up.
