Dear friends of Malteser International,
It is written in the bible that “as a mother consoles a child, so I will console you” (Isaiha 66, 13). These are well-chosen words that promise comfort, healing and help, speaking directly to the hearts of many. Women and mothers are the backbone of so many communities all around the world. It is usually them who carry the main responsibility for taking care of children, the sick and the elderly – often under adverse conditions, in addition to their jobs, and under neglect of their own rights and needs.
These days, many families throughout the world look forward to the happiest time of the year: Christmas, the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. But we also look towards one of the most important mothers in Christan history: Mary, who gave birth to her son not in the safety of a hospital or even her home, but in a stable. And who stood by her son until his death.
At Christmas, we also give gifts to our family and friends. Likely you, as well, have already given thought to gifts for your loved ones this year. But what is the ideal "this year's gift for her"? The answer is easy: the most perfect gift is your support! Always. Everywhere.
Despite their irreplaceable roles in societies, women worldwide, especially in the Global South, face various disadvantages and are heavily affected by social inequality. In times of crisis and disaster, women are among the most vulnerable, at risk of losing their livelihoods or even their lives.
In our projects in Colombia, Thailand, Nigeria, Lebanon, and many other countries, we are therefore actively committed to women and thus to a fairer society.
Let us work together to ensure that women worldwide lead safe, healthy, and self-determined lives. Your donation brings hope to women and mothers in need!
