| "Everyone is afraid and everyone is worried. Some families had not even yet rebuilt from the previous war", says Nayla El-Khoury, our Country Director in Lebanon |
Dear friends and supporters of Malteser International,
Within 24 hours after the renewed escalation of the fighting between the Israeli army and Hezbollah in Lebanon, hundreds of thousands people were fleeing their homes – many of them not for the first time. By now, the number of displaced people has passed one million.
The civilian population in Lebanon is virtually defenseless against the attacks. There are only a few publicly accessible air-raid shelters throughout the country and hardly any opportunities for civilians to seek safety. With our support, the Order of Malta Lebanon is distributing food, toys, and coloring books to children and providing medical care in temporary refugee shelters. Nayla El-Khoury, our Country Director in Lebanon, was with the team and describes her impressions in this video.
Fleeing from crisis to crisis
By the middle of March, at least 125,000 people had fled from Lebanon to Syria, most of them Syrian nationals and over half of them children. And the number is growing, putting pressure on infrastructure and public services in Syria that are still weakened after the earthquakes in 2023 and more than a decade of civil war. We will soon start to deliver emergency relief at three border health-points in Syria to support refugees, returnees, and host communities together with our partner organization IDA.
Support families in need with us
This escalating conflict has the potential to cause destabilization, hunger, and sickness even far beyond the Middle East. The earlier we start to bring relief, the better – one person in crisis at a time. Your support is more than a donation: it’s a warm blanket, a nourishing meal, a chance for a better future. |
Yours sincerely,
Johannes Schildknecht Team Lead Program Delivery at Malteser International |
Access to water is fundamental
While the world has its eyes on the Middle East, crises in other countries sadly do not pause. No few of them are related to water shortage or excess, reminding us how vital it is to treat this resource responsibly. On March 22nd, the UN World Water Day was celebrated under the motto "Where water flows, equality grows". This highlights how WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene) lays the foundation for more equality, improved livelihoods, education, safety, and a healthy life. Albert Gisore (in the middle of the picture) is our global WASH Advisor. In this interview, he explains how important it is to provide people with adequate WASH services, using the example of our work in South Sudan. |
Drought in Kenya
Northern Kenya is facing one of its worst droughts in years (see our Instagram reel below). Consecutive failed rainy seasons have left water sources dry, pushing food insecurity to crisis levels. Livelihoods are lost as livestock perish. Children, breastfeeding and pregnant women are suffering from acute malnutrition. Together with our team and partners PACIDA and AICHM, we’re delivering clean water, treating malnourished children, supporting families with food and cash, and helping communities rebuild their livelihoods. |
Floods in Mozambique
Following the devastating floods in Mozambique, a dedicated MI emergency relief team of water, logistics, and health specialists was deployed to Chókwè district in the south of the country in February. Our mission: to improve access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene at Chókwè Regional Hospital, and to help prevent and prepare for potential outbreaks of infectious diseases. Get an impression of our team's work via the Instagram reel below.
What we accomplished with your support:
- Installed handwashing stations for patients, staff, and visitors
- Distributed essential hygiene and cleaning supplies to the hospital
- Enhanced medical waste management
- Provided protective equipment to frontline healthcare staff
- Trained and supported healthcare workers to help prevent the spread of diseases like cholera
