Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and Sovereign Order of Malta deliver humanitarian aid in Gaza

Jerusalem-Rome-Cologne His Beatitude, Pierbattista Cardinal Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem entered today Gaza and reached the parish of the Holy Family for a pastoral  visit. Together with His Beatitude was Fra’ Alessandro de Franciscis, Grand Hospitaller of the Sovereign Order of Malta. Accompanying the small delegation was also Fr. Gabriele Romanelli, parish priest of Gaza. They met the suffering population to encourage them and to deliver a message of hope, solidarity, and support. His Beatitude presided the mass in the parish church with the local community and visited the St. Porphyrius Orthodox church and met with Bishop Alexios and the community.

Floods in Kenya: Malteser International distributes food and cash

Nairobi. Heavy rainfall caused by the El Niño weather phenomenon has flooded large parts of Kenya. According to government figures, around 200 people have died so far. Many are still missing. Around 165,000 people have had to leave their homes. The heavy rains have been continuing for more than six weeks. Malteser International will distribute food and cash through a local partner.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Escalation of violence leads to hunger and displacement

Nine organisations are calling for swift action to alleviate the plight of millions of people in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
The humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) is currently worsening dramatically. Decades of fighting have already led to 6.4 million internally displaced persons and 5.3 million refugees. Since autumn last year, a new outbreak of violence has turned another million people into displaced persons in their own country.

Personnel: Kees Zevenbergen appointed new Program Director of Malteser International

Cologne. As of April 1, 2024, Kees Zevenbergen (63) will take over the position of Program Director at Malteser International. Born in the Netherlands, he is a proven expert in international development cooperation: in addition to working in various countries in Africa and Asia, he has held both advisory and management positions for international non-governmental organizations as well as for actors in the government and private sector. Most recently, Kees Zevenbergen was CEO of the Dutch Christian organization Cordaid.

Unrest in Haiti: "Our Work is Becoming More Challenging, but We Remain on the Ground"

Cologne/Port-au-Prince. In the wake of the resignation of Haiti's interim Prime Minister Ariel Henry, violence in Haiti has intensified. Gangs have largely seized power in the capital, Port-au-Prince, and are engaging in acts of rape, kidnapping, murder, and terror against the populace. According to the United Nations, approximately 362,000 people are internally displaced within Haiti. "Our work is becoming increasingly challenging every day, but we at Malteser International are committed to staying on the ground and supporting the people," says Yolette Etienne, Partner and Programme Coordinator of Malteser International in Port-au-Prince.
