Dear friends and companions of Malteser International,
More than a month has passed since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. The suffering, hardship and traumatic experiences that the people from Ukraine have to go through can hardly be put into words. More than 4 million people, mainly women and children, have left their homes and loved ones behind and fled to neighbouring states to seek safety from the bombs. Millions more Ukrainians are fleeing within Ukraine. Many of them are in the west of the country. But here, too, the fear of attacks is growing. There is no certainty for the future.
Since day one of the war, people like you have been filling abstract concepts like solidarity, humanity, and empathy with life. We and our colleagues in Ukraine, as well as in the neighbouring regions, are overwhelmed and grateful for the incredible support that has reached us in the past weeks.
Thanks to countless donations and offers of help, we have been able to provide:
- Around 4,000 tons of relief supplies to Ukraine with more coming every day
- Around 1,000 meals for displaced people in Ukraine every day
- Help to more than 275,000 people fleeing across the borders of neighbouring countries
The Order of Malta family appreciates your help and says thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
We continue to stand by the people from Ukraine and will continue to adapt our relief measures to the changing needs and hardships.
Yours sincerely,
|

| Natalia and Roman | Polish-Ukrainian border
In Kroscienko, near the border with Ukraine, we took care of Natalia and her little son Roman in our medical tent. Natalia was in tears, she just said goodbye to her husband.

| He is not allowed to leave Ukraine. Roman had been crying all day. He has a middle ear infection. Our team looked after both of them, Roman received treatment and Natalia received emotional support. They were able to get warm, drink tea and take a pause in the tent. Then they were picked up by Natalia's brother-in-law. Their destination is Berlin. Natalia's sister lives there.

| Tymoteusz | Volunteer at the Polish border
Tymoteusz is a volunteer from the Order of Malta Poland. We talked to him about his motivation to help: "My family says: Tym, you have to come back home because you are studying and you have your own things. And I say:
|
|
|
|
|
|
Yes, you are right, but I can't do that because I can't concentrate and study. I know that these people, the Ukrainians, are suffering and fleeing from the war. I have to help them. A few weeks ago, I did research about the Second World War. And I thought, I really hope I won't live in a time when there will be war and only weeks later there is war. I am aware that history is being made right now. I want to be a part of that history. I want to tell my children what it was like, and I want to help these people."

| Lena | Ukrainian refugee
These words of a refugee from Ukraine, whom we met in Medyka in Poland, touch us very deeply. They give us strength to continue to stand up with full commitment for those affected by the war and to help them wherever we can. We would like to share her message with you and all the aid workers.
