🌟 One day in the life of Maykel in #Colombia 🇨🇴 Meet Maykel Gutiérrez Solano, coordinator of one of Malteser International Americas' focal point teams in Colombia. She leads the coordination of volunteers in the northern region of La Guajira and Magdalena, providing guidance to Venezuelan migrant communities on health and access to services such as education. We're thrilled to announce the publication of our feasibility study on #AnticipatoryAction! In 2023, we started an exploration into Anticipatory Action, commissioning the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) to conduct a study to determine the feasibility of integrating Anticipatory Action into our humanitarian work. Anticipatory Action refers to proactive measures taken in anticipation of crises or disasters, aiming to reduce risks, mitigate impacts, and enhance resilience before the event occurs. The study confirms Anticipatory Action as a strategy that is in line with our vision, mission, and goals. But what are the challenges, risks and opportunities for its integration into our global programs? What are the pathways that we, and other organizations, can take? Today the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa and the Grand Hospitaller of the Sovereign #OrderofMalta, Fra’ Alessandro de Franciscis, entered #Gaza. #Uganda: High School Students as Ambassadors of Peace The large number of refugees in Uganda 🇺🇬, including over 130,000 in the Rhino refugee settlement camp, leads to a strain of resources and tensions in the community, which, if unresolved, have the potential to escalate into broader conflicts. To promote a peaceful coexistence and social cohesion, students at the Rhino Camp High School have created a ‘Peace Club’ which allows for open dialogue, sports, games, and cultural activities. The club was first established in 2022 and has quickly gathered support, boasting a membership of 48 students by the end of 2023 – nearly 10% of the school's population. Amidst rising tensions in the West Nile region, these young adolescents emerge as champions of peace, guiding the community toward a more harmonious future. Yesterday, we delved into the concept of HDP-Nexus, or the "Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus," connecting #HumanitarianAid, #DevelopmentCooperation, and #Peacebuilding. 🕊️ Within this framework, one of our flagship projects takes place in the #DRCongo, near the #SouthSudan border. Here, conflicts over access to land, water and food frequently increase tensions between South Sudanese refugees and local communities. Aurèle Safari, Technical Assistant for Peacebuilding at Malteser International in the DR Congo, sheds light on the complexities: "There are groups of refugees and Congolese who are only partially familiar with the traditions and customs of the other group. This sometimes makes it difficult for people to understand each other's situation and build mutual trust." In refugee camps like Meri and Bele, home to around 30,000 South Sudanese, our Peace Education Team is making a difference. Collaborating with students, youth, mothers, community leaders and local authorities, we cultivate a culture of peace through school programs and community initiatives. These efforts promote values of non-violence and empathy, fostering understanding among the different groups. In our line of work, you might've heard of the three areas of: ➡️ Humanitarian Aid (Immediate relief such as food, water, and medical support to save lives in emergencies), ➡️Development Cooperation: (Long-term projects like building schools and hospitals to enable economic and social growth) and ➡️Peace Work (Initiatives to promote social cohesion and peaceful coexistence). At Malteser International, we strive to take all three components into account in our work. Let's celebrate Mother's Day! We are certain: Mothers are heroines! Their contribution and tireless commitment is so valuable not only to the next generation but also their community. Lah Ku Paw is one of those extraordinary women. In 2008, she fled her homeland Myanmar, and has been living in a refugee camp in Thailand ever since. She began working as a health worker and is now the midwife in charge at our MI health facility. She believes deeply in her role, stating: "It is a very important job for my community and my family. I am able to take care of mothers and their children, which I believe is very important. If they are safe, they feel well - that is satisfying to me." Despite personal challenges, she is the main provider for her family, continuously offering support and care to those around her. This Mother's Day, we want to thank mothers and women like Lah Ku Paw, whose courage and dedication inspire us all. Help us support mothers in crisis around the world.
