Meet Jalenga Kizza, a bright 14-year-old from #Ituri Province in the #DRCongo. He’s nearly finished primary school and dreams of becoming a teacher one day. But life hasn’t been easy. Jalenga and his family were forced to flee their village due to armed conflict. To access water, they used to walk up to two hours into a valley to fetch it from a river. That river, like many near Lake Albert, is a source of #schistosomiasis — also known as #bilharzia — a tropical disease caused by parasites in contaminated water. “At school, we learned that bilharzia can enter through the skin when someone stays too long in dirty or stagnant water,” Jalenga explains. ➡️ To protect Jalenga and his community, we built a well in the village. Now, families have access to clean, safe water — no more long walks or risky exposure. ➡️ We also constructed latrines at Jalenga’s school ... ➡️ ... and trained teachers in proper handwashing practices. They now pass on this life-saving knowledge to their students — who, in turn, teach their families. “More of us wash our hands before eating and after using the toilet. This way, we can avoid getting stomach problems all the time,” Jalenga shares. We’re happy to have helped improve the conditions for a healthier life for Jalenga and his community — and we're excited to see him inspire future generations as a teacher one day. 👉 Help us continue this vital work. What drives our work at Malteser International? Humanity is one of the most important values in our everyday work. 🤝 We believe that every human being has a fundamental right to life and to live in humane conditions. That is why we place special emphasis on supporting the health and well-being of those in need all over the world. As second most important commandement, Jesus urges us: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." (Matthew 22:39) In a world marked by growing division and conflict, we remain committed to standing with those in need with compassion and humanity. What drives our work at Malteser International? Over the next few weeks, we’re sharing the principles and values that guide us in our mission to serve the poor and the sick. At the heart of everything we do: Human Dignity. We believe that every human being is created in God's image and possesses an inherent inviolable dignity. Therefore, we help people regardless of their religion, political beliefs, origin, or gender. As Pope Francis reminded us: "Every human being has the right to live with dignity and to develop integrally; this fundamental right cannot be denied. (...) People have (...) a dignity based not on circumstances but on the intrinsic worth of their being." In Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, we’re celebrating #WorldBreastfeedingWeek with our partner Gonoshasthaya Kendra (গণস্বাস্থ্য কেন্দ্র). Together, we invest in awareness, education, and support for Rohingya mothers and their babies. 🤱 In refugee camps like in Cox's Bazar, where clean water and baby formula are often out of reach, breastfeeding is an important factor for babies to grow up healthy. Through activities like health talks, live demos, and hands-on counseling, we’re empowering exclusive breastfeeding, for a healthier future for all. 🎥 Watch our video to see how breastfeeding gives both moms and babies the best possible start in life. #WBW2025 #InvestInBreastfeeding #MalteserInternational #RohingyaResponse #CoxsBazar #MotherAndChildHealth #BreastfeedingMatters

Launching our first project in #Yemen Amid challenging headlines, we are happy to also share some more uplifting news from our work: At the start of 2025, we launched our very first project in Yemen. In collaboration with our partners ADRA Yemen and ADRA Deutschland e.V. and thanks to funding from Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), our goal is to break the stigma around mental health and elevate awareness. Years of conflict have left a profound impact, with over 7 million people in Yemen currently facing mental health challenges. Our key activities include: ➡️ Standardizing and developing mental health and psychosocial support training for healthcare workers ➡️ Facilitating the transfer of knowledge about mental health and psychosocial support across Yemen We are looking forward to fostering open conversations about mental health and creating an environment where support and care are accessible to everyone who needs them. In #Gaza, survival is a daily struggle. 🔺 Food is scarce or simply unaffordable. 🔺 90% of homes and infrastructure are destroyed. 🔺 Clean water is nearly impossible to find. 🔺 With no gas, families are burning wood and even clothes to cook or boil water. 🔺 Only 2 out of 36 hospitals are still functioning. Medical care is collapsing. “The aid reaching Gaza is not enough. Massive amounts of food and essential supplies are urgently needed and they must be distributed fairly,” says Dr. Ali Ibrahim Al-Musaddar, doctor and clinical director at Mar Youssef, our health center that will serve over 100 patients per day. ⚠️ Gaza is on the brink of complete collapse. Immediate action is needed now. Support humanitarian efforts. Donate today: https://lnkd.in/etqZ6yBq #GazaCrisis #HumanitarianAid #HumanitarianEmergency #ActNow #MalteserInternational

How can communities in Kenya’s arid northwest better protect themselves from the rising threats of droughts and floods❓ Together with our national partner AIC Health Ministries (AICHM) and with support from Welthungerhilfe (WHH) through the Welthungerhilfe Anticipatory Humanitarian Action Facility, we’ve launched a new effort to strengthen Community-Led Anticipatory Action in Turkana County. In July, induction workshops brought together Malteser International, AICHM, Welthungerhilfe, and key county and sub-county stakeholders to kick off: ➡️ Trigger-based early action planning ➡️ Anticipatory Humanitarian Action ➡️ Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability & Learning ➡️ Community risk communication Through in-depth engagement with community members affected by climate shocks, we are listening to lived experiences, drawing on indigenous knowledge systems, and learning about the coping strategies that people rely on during droughts and floods. This is a vital first step toward a more predictive, preventive, and locally owned humanitarian system that acts before hazards strike. Every face tells a story. A story of strength, of survival, of hope, of dignity. These are the faces that inspire our work. ✨ At Malteser International, we believe that dignity is not earned or granted. It is inherent. It belongs to every person, regardless of who they are, where they come from, what they believe, or what they’ve endured. We aspire to a world where all individuals – particularly those in need and those who are displaced – live a life of health and dignity. #Dignity #HealthAndDignity #HumanDignity #StandWithHumanity #MalteserInternational

400 families in Nippes in southern #Haiti are growing their futures with banana plants! Each family received at least 70 banana pups to grow their own nutritious food and build self-reliance. Jacqueline, one of our project participants, shared: "Thanks to these bananas, I’ll be able to grow food for my family, sell at the market, and meet my needs." This initiative not only tackles urgent food insecurity but also strengthens long-term resilience across communities in Haiti. This project is made possible thanks to funding from Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ).
