It’s been over a month since the devastating earthquake struck #Myanmar, displacing more than 200,000 people. Emergency shelters are often overcrowded. Now, with the monsoon season approaching, the situation could deteriorate further as heavy rains and floodwater threaten to wash these shelters away. Together with our partner organizations and our teams on the ground, we are providing: ➡️Tents and tarpaulins for those who lost everything ➡️ Emergency medical care for the injured ➡️Psychosocial support for traumatized survivors ➡️ Clean water and latrines where sanitation systems collapsed But more aid is still urgently needed. Habemus Papam! ✝️🕊️ With great joy, Malteser International welcomes the election of His Holiness, formerly His Eminence the Most Reverend Lord Robert Francis Prevost, Bailiff Grand Cross of Honour and Devotion of the Order of Malta, who has taken the name Leo XIV. As the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church, member of the Order of Malta and a moral authority for millions around the world, we trust that Pope Leo XIV will continue to spread the values of compassion, peace, and solidarity. For our humanitarian work, it is deeply meaningful to have a Pontiff devoted to serving the poor, the sick, and the vulnerable. We look forward to a new era of dialogue, and cooperation, and remain committed to promoting health and human dignity in the spirit of his leadership. #HabemusPapam #PopeLeo #FaithInAction #Compassion #Solidarity #HumanDignity #OrderOfMalta #MalteserInternational

Fifteen years ago, Dr. Obayda Azizy left #Syria. Today, he works as a cardiologist at the University Hospital in Bochum, Germany. Recently, as part of the #Shifa initiative, Dr. Azizy returned to Syria for a few days, offering urgently needed medical care to people in his homeland. Lena Schellhammer, our Program Manager for Syria, witnessed the dire situation in public hospitals like Al Dummar Hospital in Damascus. After 14 years of conflict, Syria’s healthcare system is in ruins: hospitals lack equipment, medical supplies are scarce, and doctors have had little to no access to further training. More than 100 Syrian doctors living in Germany, including Dr. Azizy, united for the Shifa Campaign—a three-week mission to provide free medical care in Syria. Returning to Syria after so many years was deeply emotional for the doctors. Many expressed joy that the war has ended, but the immense task of rebuilding the healthcare system remains. This initiative is supported by our partner on the ground, the Independent Doctors Association (IDA), as well as Aktion Deutschland Hilft e.V., Germany’s Relief Coalition. #HopeForSyria #HumanitarianAid #HealthcareForAll #RebuildingLives

Sharifa Begum from northern Bangladesh knows what it means to start over – again and again. Every year, floods destroyed her home, food, and belongings. As a single mother, she struggled to make ends meet. Everything changed when she joined a weaving center supported by our local partner AFAD, through a project funded by Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) and Aktion Deutschland Hilft e.V.. In a safe and supportive space, she was able to work and practice her skills while still caring for her family. For Sharifa, weaving is more than just a job: “I can earn on my own. This income allows me to support my son's education and secure a better future for us." 📖 “Standards Without Listening Are Just Control”: William Anderson, CEO of the Sphere Standards, on the Sphere Rewrite, P-FIM, and the Future of Humanitarian Accountability With major donors pulling back and frontline realities growing more complex, the humanitarian sector faces more than budget pressure. It faces a deeper question: Can we turn this moment into a reset—toward dignity, listening, and people-first practice? In our new OneSec interview, William Anderson shares why: 🔹 now is the time to re-center accountability on people's dignity, not procedures 🔹 the next Sphere Handbook must be more agile, digital, and community-fed 🔹 and how P-FIM is key to closing the gap between global standards and local context 🔓 Crisis or Chance? Let's make it a turning point. 🔗 Read the full interview: https://lnkd.in/eCaqwi7A 👇 What does real accountability look like—when defined by communities themselves? 14-year-old Junior and his older sister Ange, attend Mbunya Primary School in the remote Angumu Health Zone in DR Congo. At school, they learn more than reading and writing: they learn how to stay healthy. Ange helps care for her younger cousins, who fled conflict, and walks down steep slopes to collect water in heavy jerrycans for her household. "We learned about keeping our hands clean at school and we have to do the same at home, but the problem sometimes is that we don't have enough water” she says. Thanks to Malteser International’s work in their school, students now have clean latrines, handwashing stations, and access to safe water. They’ve also been taught how hygiene can help prevent dangerous diseases like schistosomiasis, which spreads through contaminated water. Junior dreams of becoming a doctor. “I love studying anatomy” he says. “In the future, I'd love help those suffering from illness." This #HandHygieneDay, we celebrate the life-saving power of clean hands, and young people like Ange and Junior who are helping protect their communities through knowledge and care. #HandHygieneDay #CleanHandsSaveLives #WASH #OneHealth #MalteserInternational

At just 20 years old, Maryam lives with her husband and three children in Mashamari Camp, Borno State. Until recently, she struggled to meet her family's needs. But after enrolling in Malteser International’s women’s skill-building program, Maryam learned tailoring and received a start-up kit including a sewing machine, fabric, and basic tools. “This training helps me be financially independent,” she says. “Money was a big reason I used to argue with my husband.” With support from Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany, our program empowers women like Maryam to start income-generating activities from home, helping them build a more stable, self-reliant future. You can help more women like Maryam take charge of their lives. ➡ Learn more about our work in Nigeria: https://malt-int.org/thdr ➡ Donate now: https://malt-int.org/otrn #WomenEmpowerment #Livelihoods #GBVPrevention #MalteserInternational #Nigeria #GFFO

Earlier this year, little Judith was admitted to our nutrition program in a severely malnourished state. Today, thanks to your support, she’s making remarkable progress and regaining her strength. Her mother, Jeannette Rameau, couldn’t be more grateful. In #Haiti’s Nippes department, we work closely with community health centers to reach malnourished children, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women, offering essential medicines and nutritional supplements. Child malnutrition remains a heartbreaking reality in Haiti, but together, we can make a difference. Thank you so much for your warm welcome, Independent Doctors Association (IDA). We are proud to see the great impact of the Shifa Medical Campaign in #Syria.
As part of our strategic partnership with Malteser International, the Independent Doctors Association (IDA) had the honor of welcoming an official delegation from Malteser to our office in Damascus for a multi-day visit aimed at reviewing the achievements of the Shifa Medical Campaign and the broader efforts to support the healthcare sector in Syria. The visit included media engagements with the German television channels ARD and ZDF, where the goals and field impact of the campaign were highlighted. It also featured site visits to key hospitals, including Dumar Cardiac Hospital, the National University Hospital, and Mujtahid Hospital, where the delegation met with hospital directors, participating doctors, and patients who benefited from the campaign’s medical interventions. Additionally, the delegation visited Jobar district in Damascus to witness firsthand the extent of the destruction suffered by healthcare facilities in the area. The visit concluded with participation in the Shifa Campaign Closing Conference, which brought together prominent officials and medical figures to celebrate the collective efforts made toward strengthening healthcare services for the most vulnerable populations. We extend our sincere gratitude to the Malteser International team for their continuous support and look forward to further strengthening our collaboration to build a more efficient and sustainable healthcare system in Syria. #ShifaCampaign #IndependentDoctorsAssociation #MalteserInternational #HealthcareSupport #SyriaHealthcare #MedicalHumanitarianAid #PartnershipForHealth #GlobalHealth #MedicalSolidarity #HumanitarianSupport
