Dear friends and supporters of Malteser International,
Ebola is currently spreading rapidly in the northeastern province of Ituri in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. More than 130 people have already died, and the actual number of cases is likely much higher. Over 500 people are suspected to have contracted the virus. Without a vaccine for the current Bundibugyo variant, and in a region marked by conflict and displacement, the virus threatens to continue spreading unchecked.
Ebola is a highly infectious disease that is transmitted through bodily fluids. This is why in the DR Congo, we are raising awareness in communities, training health workers, and strengthening infection prevention and control measures. This includes providing hygiene protocols, constructing infectious disease treatment centres, and improving access to safe water in health facilities and communities.
At the border with Uganda, where the risk of further spread is particularly high, we are supplying disinfectant, gloves, masks, and soap, and setting up handwashing stations.
But to scale up our response quickly and protect people effectively, we urgently need additional funds.
Please support our work with your donation. Together, we can save lives and help contain the spread of Ebola.
Thank you for your support! Yours sincerely,
Dr. Jean-Paul Uvoyo Ulangi Country Medical Coordinator for Malteser International in the DR Congo |
