Dear friends of Malteser International,
Last weekend, Morocco experienced its worst earthquake in around 100 years. According to current figures, more than 2,900 people died in the 6.8 magnitude earthquake, more than 5,000 are injured.
Only a few days later heart-wrenching images of floods reached us from Libya. On Sunday, storm 'Daniel' struck the North African country, leaving behind massive destruction.
Looking back over the last days and months, many people have been confronted with natural disasters and also the effects of climate change:
Out-of-control wildfires in numerous regions such as Greece, Canada, Hawaii and the Canary Islands, have not only destroyed large areas of forest, but also claimed human lives and pushed rescue workers to their limits. In our project regions in Asia, on the other hand, our teams on the ground reported immense monsoon rainfall on a catastrophic scale.
Our deepest sympathy, thoughts, and prayers go out to all those affected by natural disasters. Wherever possible, will stand at their side and support them as best as we can.
We also work tirelessly with the diplomatic network of the Order of Malta, and by applying sustainable approaches across our portfolio, to help tackle the climactic and ecological root causes of worsening natural disasters. This is in keeping with Pope Francis’ appeal in Laudato ‘Si: “The urgent challenge to protect our common home includes a concern to bring the whole human family together to seek a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change.”
It is your support that enables us to support people affected by the earthquake in Morocco and also do something about the effects of climate change and lend a helping hand to people in times of need. For this, I would like to express my most heartfelt gratitude to you.
Sincerely yours,
|

| Floods in Thailand and Bangladesh
Heavy monsoon rains have caused flooding in our project regions in Thailand and Bangladesh. Poor people in particular have been hit hardest. Through our partner organization GK in Bangladesh, we are therefore distributing cash to families affected by the floods. In Thailand, we have started repair work in the affected refugee camps.

Um Hussein's journey in agriculture has been tough. Last year's harvest barely sustained her family. After the devastating earthquake in February this year, farming became their only lifeline. Fortunately, the tide has turned this year, as our agriculture project has made a real impact for Um Hussein. See for yourself in this video:
