Dear friends and companions of Malteser International,
Syria marks 12 years of civil war. Many children have never experienced a childhood without war, displacement, and destruction. Like 14-year-old Maram, who grew up near Aleppo in the north of the country. On the night of February 6, her parents woke her up in the middle of the night because the ground was shaking. She is the first to reach the stairwell and this would be her lifeline. A rescue team was able to pull her from the rubble, but for her parents and three sisters it was too late.
The despair of the people in Syria amid the devastating destruction and the loss of loved ones is immeasurable. For more than three years, I lived with my family in Lebanon, where I worked for Malteser International. The great need of the people in Syria was felt all the way to neighboring Lebanon.
After the earthquake, the situation in northwestern Syria has further deteriorated. Many families have lost their homes again and the vast majority of the population depends on humanitarian aid. We feel for the people who have been suffering from violence, displacement and hunger for so long.
Many of us celebrate Easter in a few days. The Easter message of the Bible reminds us that life is stronger than death and love is the power that overcomes even the darkest times.
Together with our partner organizations, we have been working tirelessly since 2012 to alleviate the suffering of the people in Syria. And we will not abandon them, but we will continue to provide humanitarian assistance as long as it is needed.
