Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear friends and companions of Malteser International,
The New Year is only a few days old. Even over the holidays we have never been away, because humanitarian aid knows no time off. The humanitarian challenges we face remain.
In northwestern Syria, 2.8 million people remain displaced by the conflict. 1.7 million of the displaced - 80 percent women and children - live in crowded informal camps and unfinished buildings. Now winter is also setting in, with temperatures at night below freezing over the past few days. It is bitterly cold.
In eastern Kenya, the ongoing drought is leaving people in starvation. In Tonga, the volcanic eruption a few days ago shooked the inhabitants of the island state. Yesterday a 5.3 magnitude earthquake hit the southwest of Haiti.
Syria, Kenya, Tonga, Haiti - displacement, starvation, natural disasters. The humanitarian challenges are greater than ever.
Once again, we need to serve people as best we can, listen to them and focus on their needs.
And that is what we do - around the world, day by day. Together with our employees, partners and with you.
Thank you very much for your support and tireless engagement. It is needed so much.
Yours truly,
|

| War, displacement, and now an extreme and prolonged cold snap. It has been snowing for days and several snowstorms hit the northwest of Syria. At night, temperatures are currently dropping to as low as -14 degrees.
People in the refugee camps are particularly hard hit by the cold. The unheated tents offer no protection from the freezing cold and many shelters have already collapsed under the weight of the masses of snow. In addition, people do not have adequate clothing to protect them from these temperatures. Winter clothing, suitable shoes or hats are urgently needed.
Together with our local partners, we are standing by the people in Syria. Be part of it and support the people with your donation.

Three consecutive rainy seasons have failed to arrive in eastern Kenya. Continous drought leaves people in great starvation.
According to the United Nations, around 2.9 million people in eastern Kenya are in urgent need of aid. Together with our local partner Pacida we bring clean drinking water directly to them in the villages. We distribute cash so that the people in this affected region can buy food. In the past weeks, we have distributed animal feed for the livestock. Support us in our relief efforts.

A thick layer of ash lies on the streets, houses and fields. Some days ago, the volcanic eruption shook the inhabitants of the island nation of Tonga.
80 percent of the population, about 84,000 people, are now suffering the consequences. Above all, drinking water and food are needed.
Together with Order of Malta - Australia and New Zealand Maltesers, we will assist the people on the ground. With the support of Aktion Deutschland Hilft, we have provided 20,000 Euros. Join us in helping the people in Tonga.
