Nepal

Nepal is among the fifty poorest countries in the world. Most of the population makes a living off subsistence farming, while tourism and remittances are bringing in the much-needed foreign currencies. However, after being hit by the Covid-19 pandemic in multiple waves, any triumphs in poverty reduction and developmental progress were quickly destroyed.

More than one third of children aged under 5 are suffering from malnourishment. Conditioned by its geographical location, Nepal is highly prone to natural disasters like earthquakes, landslides and floods.

In April 2021, a new mutation of the coronavirus led to a rapid upsurge of infections and Covid-19 related deaths. As such, the already fragile healthcare system was threatened to collapse. We offered support to people through medical aid on site.

Building disaster resilience in Nepal with the support of your donations

On the 25th of April 2015, Nepal was struck by one of the most powerful earthquakes seen in the last 80 years. Countless aftershocks followed and caused further destruction, especially in the rural areas. More than 8,000 people lost their lives. Over 2.8 million people were affected by the quakes. Given the extent of the damage, after providing emergency relief, we also supported the country and its people in the areas of shelter, water and sanitation, psychological support and health, while preparing communities for future natural disasters.

Since 2020 we are working in close collaboration with local partners RSDC and KOSHISH with a focus on holistic community development to support the most vulnerable populations of Nepal. Along with preventative measures, which strengthen community resilience, we are conducting a human rights-based Global WASH Program in Nepal, which entails interventions for the improvement of water and sanitation facilities. In our other cross-country project, the “WomenPreneurs4Plastic” we are addressing the plastic problem by its roots and support women on their journey to a self-determined life.

India/Nepal: Malteser warns: The virus is spreading rapidly in neighbouring countries

Cologne/Rajasthan.  In addition to India, its neighbouring countries are also reporting new highs in new coronavirus infections every day. In Nepal, the number has risen rapidly. Malteser warns: “Last weekend alone, almost half of all coronavirus tests were positive. We have a situation in Nepal like the one we observed in India about a fortnight ago. We see the virus spreading from one country to neighbouring countries. It will only be days before the images we see of people dying on the streets also reach us from Nepal. We have to act quickly now to prevent the next disaster,” says Cordula Wasser, Head of the Asia Department of Malteser International.

Emergency Relief in Nepal

Emergency relief missions are probably what comes to most people’s minds when they hear the words ‘humanitarian aid’, or ‘disaster relief’. However, emergency missions are actually just one part of a much bigger proces that goes on for years before and after disasters.
